Capture Your Memories

If you prefer to manage your own archive, I’ve put together a list of technology I recommend for capturing, storing, organizing, and preserving your memories. You can purchase the equipment yourself and manage your archive independently. Or, if you’d rather not deal with the technology, I can manage it for you.

Phones

The best smartphones for high-fidelity photo and video capture on the go.

Cameras

Mirrorless and compact cameras selected for their archival sensor performance.

Audio Devices

Reliable recorders for oral history interviews and environmental soundscapes.

Microphones

External microphones for superior vocal clarity during recording sessions.

Memory Cards

Trusted flash storage that prioritizes data integrity and long-term stability.

Accessories

Tripods, cases, and protective gear for safe and steady memory capture.

Store & Back Up Your Memories

Physical storage is only one part of a proper archive. Building a resilient collection requires more than just a single drive; important memories should always have appropriate backup and redundancy to protect against hardware failure or accidental loss.

External Hard Drives

Reliable, high-capacity desktop solutions for primary local storage and long-term archiving.

Portable SSDs

Fast, durable, and pocket-sized. Best for active projects and secure off-site copies.

Hard Drive Docks

Professional docks and enclosures for managing internal drives and cold-storage archives.

USB Hubs & Adapters

Reliable connectivity for multiple drives and legacy hardware on modern workstations.

Cloud & Off-site Infrastructure

While consumer photo apps are convenient, a true archival strategy often requires more robust infrastructure. Cloud storage serves as your off-site redundancy, protecting against local disasters.

Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service)

Amazon S3 is the industry standard for object storage. It is not an 'app' for casual photo browsing; it is a professional infrastructure tool. S3 is best for individuals who are comfortable managing their own technical storage backends and want extreme durability (99.999999999% over a given year). Handle with caution: configuration errors can lead to unexpected costs or data exposure.

Alternative Cloud Backup

For most users, I recommend dedicated backup services like Backblaze or iDrive. These services operate on a 'set and forget' model, automatically mirroring your local archive to secure off-site servers without requiring manual infrastructure management. This is the safer route for those prioritizing preservation over direct control.

You Can Do It Yourself,
Or not!

Buying the technology is the easy part. The harder part is getting everything organized, deciding what belongs where, maintaining backups, keeping the archive current, and making sure your memories are still accessible years from now.

If you want to manage everything yourself, these recommendations can help you get started. If you’d rather hand over the technical work, that’s what I do.
